ZARZUELA TONIGHT

A masque-like musical theatre had existed in Spain since the time of Juan del Encina. The zarzuela genre was innovative in giving a dramatic function to the musical numbers, which were integrated into the argument of the work. Dances and choruses were incorporated as well as solo and ensemble numbers, all to orchestral accompaniment. Figures such as Federico Romero & Guillermo Fernández Shaw, Anselmo Cuadrado Carreño, and Luis Fernández de Sevilla carried on the work of the best zarzuela playwrights, employing scrupulous and varied theatrical craft, sophisticated versification and structure, plus an awareness of the great tradition from which they had emerged. In the first years of the 20th century greater quality pieces are composed (such as Doña Francisquita by Amadeo Vives). Zarzuela was supported with these works that, sometimes, were adapted to the Italian opera musical structure, thanks to the works of Pablo Sorozábal, Federico Moreno Torroba and Jacinto Guerrero.

YINKA SHONIBARE

Yinka Shonibare, MBE: A Flying Machine for Every Man, Woman and Child

Yinka Shonibare, MBE, British-born of Nigerian parents, is best known for installations and photographs reflecting the legacy of 19th century colonialism. He creates mise-en-scénes of headless mannequins in Victorian attire of wax-printed African fabrics, produced in Britain and the Netherlands. Shonibare creates a mélange of African and European cultures reflecting a legacy of the colonizer and the colonized. The installation Shonibare will create for MAM, A Flying Machine for Every Man, Woman and Child, features an idealized family clothed in his wax-printed, 19th century attire astride human powered 19th century flying machines. The symbolic aspirations of flying, expressive of emancipatory freedom, allude to the monumental efforts by thousands of refugees to reach a city of promise as millions of tourists arrive seeking fun-and-sun.

SAVE AS

SAVE AS: Contemporary Chinese Art Born of Ancient Traditions
Cao Xiaodong and Li Xiaofeng

The country’s first major exhibition of paintings by Cao Xiaodong and porcelain sculpture by Li Xiaofeng. Although his computerized screen-pattern technique and compositions clearly place Xiaodong in the sphere of contemporary art, his use of traditional tones and the sense of nostalgia from the newspaper and magazine photos he reproduces cause critics to link his unique style with ancient watercolor and ink landscapes. He is well known in China for his 500-portrait mural of Chinese who were famous from 1911 to 1949. Li Xiaofeng, a 43-year-old Beijing artist, has found a way to link his contemporary work with traditional Chinese art stretching back to the 10th Century. In his art, the links are literal: he sews shards of porcelain from the Song, Ming, Yuan, and Qing dynasties on a leather undergarment to created full-length dresses and men’s jackets, complete with neckties.

The Artist is seen working in his studio on the now famous Marilyn Monroe painting, outdoors with the Poppy paintings, with friends and other artists, and in public situations. These portraits capture an inside glimpse into the artist's world at the time and are now seen as important documents in telling the story of America's most famous contemporary artist. LIMPIEZAS

An exhibition of new contemporary photography by Miami based Art Collective, GisMo. With steamy and immersive contemporary portraiture in Limpiezas (cleansings), GisMo draws attention to the contrast between Nature and the modern world. Envisaging the response to an abrupt absence of technology as positive and rejuvenating, the images offer seductive visions of feral humanity and transformation. By addressing the recent boom in gadgetry and the desire to compulsively 'connect' with distain GisMo argue that as a species we are in fact disconnecting: Increasingly pent-up under electric light in concrete bunkers, and afraid, we have become disparate: not only from each other, but also from Nature.
