STEP AFRIKA

Stepping is a unique dance tradition created by African American college students. In stepping, the body is used as an instrument to create intricate rhythms and sounds through a combination of footsteps, claps and spoken word. The tradition grew out of the song and dance rituals practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities in the early 1900s. Stepping comes from a long and rich tradition in African-based communities that use movement, words and sounds to communicate allegiance to a group. Step Afrika is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Founded in December 1994, the company is critically-acclaimed for its efforts to promote an understanding of and appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition's use as an educational tool for young people worldwide. Step Afrika reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year and has performed on many stages in North & South America, Europe, Africa and the Caribbean.

PALM BEACH INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE BIENNALE

Last year this exhibition of large sculpture presented by the Cultural Trust of the Palm Beaches was far better than it had any right to be. Unfortunately, the Trust's website does not describe the venue, which is in Wellington on vacant land. So call them and bother them at 561.333.4948 until they learn to set up a proper website.

LA TRAVIATA

This has been a superb season for the Palm Beach Opera so far. Their last production, "L'Elisir D'Amore," was absolutely delightful. Their season finale is Verdi's La Traviata. It's the story of the famed courtesan, Violetta ValĂ©ry, who despite herself and her attitude towards life, falls in love with Alfredo Germont and starts a new chapter by setting up house outside of Paris. Tragedy looms on the horizon when Alfredo’s father pays her a visit, accusing her of ruining his family’s honor with her reputation and threatening to disinherit Alfredo. And there's no reason to think it won't be wonderful.

PINK MARTINI

Part French chanson, Argentine tango and soft merengue with a dash of low-lit jazz lounge, Pink Martini has been heard at the Cannes Film Festival and the opening party of the New York Museum of Modern Art. The group has blossomed from a quintet into a suave salon orchestra, boasting a multilingual repertory equally at home on concert stages and in smoky clubs. Based in Portland, Oregon, Pink Martini has recorded three albums: 1997’s Sympathique, 2004’s Hang on Little Tomato, and their latest, 2007’s Hey Eugene. The sensibility reminds me of disco's Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band - except the beat is gone. Very seductive in a very peculiar way. Absolutely hipper than hip, assuming a languid world.

WARD 57

WARD 57
by Jessica Goldberg
World Premiere

How do we honor sacrifices made by soldiers asked to fight in an unpopular war? When is the honor exposed as exploitation? These are more than theoretical questions at Walter Reed’s Ward 57. Hollywood challenges military policy when a screenwriter asks for interviews with injured veterans for a new movie about their extraordinary sacrifice. This compassionate new drama reveals the personal secrets and political agendas of those on both sides of the controversy over the Iraq war.

PIVOT POINTS (PART 1)

Since 1995, MOCA has been developing a collection of pivotal works by contemporary artists. These work mark important moments in the careers of these artists and turning points in contemporary art. Each of these works is key to the development of the museum’s collection and essential in establishing the important pivot points for its growth. Among the featured works in this exhibition are recent gifts by Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz, which were donated to MOCA and Tate in London, and include the complete project No Ghost Just a Shell, a multi-media collaboration originated by Pierre Huyghe and Philippe Parreno, and the monumental installation Zero Hero by John Bock. Also on view will be Thomas Hirschhorn’s Diorama, 1997, a gift of the Martin Z. Margulies Family Foundation, Jose Bedia’s Cargo Cult, 2005, purchased with funds provided by Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz and Diane and Robert Moss, and works by Matthew Barney, John Baldessari and Roni Horn among others.

DRESSAGE UNDER THE STARS

Dressage riding, in the vernacular, is making a horse dance. You can watch that done while dining at the Player's Club.

Friday nights to April 4th

Incidentally, the Player's Club is not named for Vegas players, or sexual players. It's named for polo players. It used to be one of the restaurants at Palm Beach Polo and Country Club, but is now open to the public. You used to be able to watch high-goal polo from the restaurant's patio, but the field it abuts is no longer used for polo. Hence the dressage.

Circ X Stripped: Diana Lozano holds an M.F.A. from Cal Arts in Performance Art, Design and Technology through the schools of theater and Integrated Media. She currently teaches at the New World School of the Arts, where she received her B.F.A. in musical theater. Founder and artistic director of the Production Company and the theatrical circus troupe, Circ X, she has traveled the globe producing, designing and performing. BELARMINO MIRANDA

Colombian Belarmino Miranda is a neo realist. The style of his paintings - mostly of women - remind me of Norman Rockwell - except that I'd hope if I bought one of his paintings I'd get a date with his model. You can see much of his work on his website, and fourteen paintings on exhibition in Miami.

We don't usually highlight old plays - but while the Sun-Sentinel does not much care for this play (about whether an all-white canvas is or is not art) itself, it is ecstatic about this production. Read the review at the above link.

2008 GENEROSITY POLO CUP

This is supposed to be the second 40 goal game of 2008. This time it's a whole day event: rides, petting zoo, sports challenges and food stands to enjoy Argentine delicacies. However, the players have not yet been announced - and here's why that is, I suspect:

With Cambiaso dominating the game and setting the standard for the 10 goal ranking, a lot of former 10 goalers have been demoted to 9. There are not as many 10 goalers this year as there have been in years past - and the organizers may be having trouble finding eight available 10 goalers. We'll report further when we know more.

BLACKBIRD

A South Florida premiere, Blackbird by David Harrower is a story of an unconventional love affair. A young woman arrives unannounced at the office of a much older man. Guilt, anger and raw emotions run high as they recollect the passionate relationship they shared 15 years earlier. It is the winner of the 2007 Laurence Olivier award for best new play in London. The Sun-Sentinel praised the play and the production highly.
