Ballet Florida Needs Your Help

For 22 seasons, audiences have been delighted and challenged by one of the best dance companies in the country. Ballet Florida has consistently brought work of the highest quality to our audiences. We're proud that our more than twenty professional dancers live in our community. As an organization, much of our more than $4,000,000 budget is spent in Palm Beach County.

But Ballet Florida is more than just a professional dance company. Thousands of students have enrolled in The Academy of Ballet Florida and left with improved skills, discipline, and a stronger sense of self esteem. For them, we offer a safe and rewarding place to chase their dreams. It's a second home for many.

Ballet Florida has never let economic limitations prevent others from experiencing the joy of dance. Every year, 2,200 less privileged children attend a free performance of Marie Hale's The Nutcracker. Who else makes this kind of gift available to our community? If we didn't, who would? Our City Dance Outreach program allows close to 100 underprivileged children to attend our Academy for free. What would these children be doing with their spare time if not for Ballet Florida?

While Ballet Florida has continued to receive critical praise for its work, the company has experienced the same economic slowdown as the rest of the nation. We must weather the storm of shrinking corporate sponsorships, high expenses, and reduced ticket revenue.

JOHN WILKES BOOTH - FOR FREE!

The common wisdom is that John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of Abraham Lincoln, was a madman and a failure as an actor.

But the truth is that Wilkes was the matinee idol of his time – and the attack on Lincoln was not the act of a maniac, but a part of a plan developed at the highest levels of the Confederacy.

In “Consider the Elephant,” the story of Wilkes’ life and death is told by his brother, Edwin, the greatest Shakespearean actor of his age. Aram Schefrin is the author of four novels. A student of Stephen Sondheim and Carlos Montoya, he co-founded and was the lyricist and guitarist for the jazz/rock group Ten Wheel Drive, which had its standing ovations in the late '60's and early seventies. After five years on the road, he retired to the studio where he produced several early disco hits. A graduate of Columbia College and Harvard Law School, he returned to the practice of law in 1977. He now practices in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Florida, and lives in Wellington, Florida with his wife, two dogs, four cats and three polo ponies.
