THE WORLD WITHOUT US

Alan Weismann, author of "The World Without Us", speaks as part of the Four Arts Florida Voices program.

The World Without Us opens with this simple question: What would happen to Earth if humans vanished? Into the current conversation about climate change, Weisman offers a fresh approach to confronting issues of environmental destruction. Alan Weisman has been a contributing editor to The Los Angeles Times Magazine and is Laureate Associate Professor of Journalism at the University of Arizona. His reports have appeared in Harper’s, The New York Magazine and The Los Angeles Times.

HABANA ABIERTA

Habana Abierta emerges from the creative resurgence that took place in the city of Havana in the early 1990’s, when a new generation of composers, musicians, visual artists and writers were paving a new cultural scene in Cuba. Their music is a reflection of the eclecticism that marked this generation, and can be defined as the fusion where rock, pop and traditional Cuban forms are recombined into new genres of conga/funk, timba/rock, bolero, pop, cha-cha-cha/blues and son/pop.

LIGHT IN THE HOUSE

The Demetrius Klein Dance Company will surprise you with its inventive choreography and movement skills. Really!

OUR COMMENT: The second part of this triptych brought Demetrius Klein's wife (sorry, we don't remember her name) into a pas de deux with Demetrius. She is recovering from a stroke, and the piece was incredibly touching as she moved as best she could with the tender support of her husband.

THE BUGCHASERS

Having received rave reviews last season for his dance-theater drama Kitchen Monkey, Miami-based artist Octavio Campos premieres his newest work The Bugchasers at Carnival Center for the Performing Arts from October 25th through 27th, 2007. Sensual and violent yet hilarious, The Bugchasers is a dance-theater meditation on sex, lies, and death-wish eroticism. Through high-intensity visuals and provocative texts, the Camposition Ensemble, directed by Campos, tells a dark story of those who would risk their lives to achieve a twisted sense of intimacy. Gay and straight, male and female - anyone could be a Bugchaser.
