DIXIE HIGHWAY UNCOVERED2

Post-1920's furniture has not been hot in Palm Beach, which is mired in Tuscan, French and what we call Florida overstuffed beige. Miami, on the other hand, has enthusiastically embraced Bauhaus and the work of van der Rohe, Saarinen, Breuer and Le Corbusier. If the trend is beginning to catch you, check out Rico Baca and Wade Terwilliger's Objects in the Loft. They carry both original pieces and 1960's and '70's editions. Their collection moves quickly, so keep looking.

LEON REDBONE

We always thought Redbone was a bit too one-track old-timey, but if you haven't seen him, you should - that is, if you want to see Rudy Vallee or Al Jolson strained through a jigger of acid-laced gin.

This one sails out of Ft. Lauderdale and stops at Tortola, St. Maarten and Grand Turk. On the way listen to a ton of blues, headlined by Taj Mahal and Dr. John. It's a little late now - limited cabin space is available - so you might want to consider this for next year; but it's a guaranteed raunchy experience.

DIXIE HIGHWAY UNCOVERED

Douglas T. Ballard, Ralph A. Cheramie and Anthony F. Masters, after running a gallery in New Orleans, have opened up on Dixie Highway with a collection of Chinese ceramics, Asian art and antique furniture and porcelain. West Palm Beach now has a first-rate source for very high quality Asian art. Their collection has to be seen to be believed - and they'd love to have you visit.

This is not to slight Alan Friedman's Incurable Collector, which has a small but impeccable collection of large pieces of Chinese sculpture, as well as sizeable pieces in other genres, too.

JOE COCKER HEART AND SOUL TOUR

We first saw Joe Cocker at New York's The Scene in 1968. The next time we saw him was on our living room couch, on which our roommate had ensconced him at two in the morning. We talked to Joe for three hours and didn't understand a word he said. But with Ray Charles dead, he's the last of the genuine soul geniuses. Better catch this one.

LIMON DANCE COMPANY

For more than five decades, Limón Dance Company has received acclaim for its dramatic expression, technical mastery and expansive, subtle movement. The company is the living legacy of the movement technique and philosophy of theater developed by dance legend Jose Limón and his mentors, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman, whose innovative works are considered masterpieces of American dance. Their repertory balances classic works of American modern dance with commissions from contemporary choreographers.
"For drama, virtuosity, and grace, there’s no finer company.” -- The Village Voice
“The emphasis of any Limón dance is on the soul…” -- Lesley Valdes, San Jose Mercury News
“As always with Limón’s group pieces, the use of stage space and blocks of dancers – indeed, the whole sense of dance architecture – was a stunning achievement.” – Los Angeles Times
